Gulf Scholars Program, Certificate (GSP@TAMU-CC)

Program Description

The Gulf Scholars Program at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (GSP@TAMU-CC) makes an unparalleled commitment to student success to build capacity, knowledge, and connections for our students both on campus and together with local community partners so they are well-prepared to serve as leaders that understand the complex balance needed to guide us towards a sustainable, resilient, prosperous, and equitable future in South Texas and the greater Gulf of Mexico region. Upon successful completion of coursework, students will earn a certificate.

Student Learning Outcomes

For this certificate, students will successfully complete a Gulf Impact Project as well as demonstrate knowledge of:

  • the Gulf of Mexico.
  • intercultural understanding and competencies.
  • social responsibility and ethical reasoning.
  • interdisciplinary and integrative learning.
  • innovation and entrepreneurship, including career development.

Admissions Requirements

  • Sophomore, junior, or senior status.
  • Completion of the application found on the GSP@TAMU-CC website.
  • Approval of GSP@TAMU-CC Certificate faculty.

GULF 3101  Gulf of Mexico Studies I  
1 Semester Credit Hour  

The first part of a multidisciplinary, experiential class that explores the environmental, social, technological, economic, scientific, and political issues facing the Gulf of Mexico. Course activities will integrate students’ diverse disciplinary backgrounds and experiences. In addition to traditional course delivery modes, the course includes guest speakers, field trips, and service-learning components.

GULF 3102  Gulf of Mexico Studies II  
1 Semester Credit Hour  

The second part of a multidisciplinary, experiential class that explores the environmental, social, technological, economic, scientific, and political issues facing the Gulf of Mexico. Course activities will integrate students’ diverse disciplinary backgrounds and experiences. In addition to traditional course delivery modes, the course includes guest speakers, field trips, and service-learning components. Special emphasis on social responsibility, ethical reasoning, interdisciplinary and integrative learning.

Prerequisite: GULF 3101.

GULF 3103  Gulf of Mexico Studies III  
1 Semester Credit Hour  

The third part of a multidisciplinary, experiential class in which students will complete a proposal for the Gulf Impact Project (GIP, or capstone project) to be completed in GULF 3304. In addition to traditional course delivery modes, the course includes guest speakers, field trips, and service-learning components, integrating students’ diverse disciplinary backgrounds and experiences. Special emphasis on entrepreneurship and innovation, including career development related to the development of the Gulf Impact Project proposal.

Prerequisite: GULF 3101 and 3102.

GULF 3304  Gulf of Mexico Studies IV  
3 Semester Credit Hours  

The fourth part of a multidisciplinary, experiential class in which students successfully carry out and complete their Gulf Impact Projects (GIP), proposed in GULF 3103. Specific activities will be tailored to the particular projects, which can vary depending on the project focus, design, scope and other project-defined characteristics.

Prerequisite: GULF 3101, 3102 and 3103.
