Program Description

The Gulf Scholars Program at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (GSP@TAMU-CC) makes an unparalleled commitment to student success to build capacity, knowledge, and connections for our students both on campus and together with local community partners so they are well-prepared to serve as leaders that understand the complex balance needed to guide us towards a sustainable, resilient, prosperous, and equitable future in South Texas and the greater Gulf region. Upon successful completion of coursework, students will earn a certificate.

Student Learning Outcomes

For this certificate, students will successfully complete a Gulf Impact Project as well as demonstrate knowledge of:

  • the Gulf.
  • intercultural understanding and competencies.
  • social responsibility and ethical reasoning.
  • interdisciplinary and integrative learning.
  • innovation and entrepreneurship, including career development.

Admissions Requirements

  • Sophomore, junior, or senior status.
  • Completion of the application found on the GSP@TAMU-CC website.
  • Approval of GSP@TAMU-CC Certificate faculty.

GULF 3101  Gulf Studies I  
1 Semester Credit Hour  
The first part of a multidisciplinary, experiential class that explores the environmental, social, technological, economic, scientific, and political issues facing the Gulf. Course activities will integrate students’ diverse disciplinary backgrounds and experiences. In addition to traditional course delivery modes, the course includes guest speakers, field trips, and service-learning components.
GULF 3102  Gulf Studies II  
1 Semester Credit Hour  
The second part of a multidisciplinary, experiential class that explores the environmental, social, technological, economic, scientific, and political issues facing the Gulf. Course activities will integrate students’ diverse disciplinary backgrounds and experiences. In addition to traditional course delivery modes, the course includes guest speakers, field trips, and service-learning components. Special emphasis on social responsibility, ethical reasoning, interdisciplinary and integrative learning.
Prerequisite: GULF 3101.
GULF 3301  Introduction to Gulf Studies  
3 Semester Credit Hours (3 Lecture Hours)  
This is the first of a pair of multidisciplinary, experiential classes that explores the environmental, social, technological, economic, scientific, and political issues facing the Gulf. Course activities will integrate students’ diverse disciplinary backgrounds and experiences. Special emphasis will be placed on social responsibility, ethical reasoning, interdisciplinary and integrative learning. In addition to traditional course delivery modes, the course includes guest speakers and field trips. In this first course, students will complete a proposal for a Gulf Impact Project (GIP, or capstone project); the project is to be completed in the next semester, leading to award of a Gulf Scholars Program Certificate.
GULF 3302  Gulf Impact Project  
3 Semester Credit Hours (3 Lecture Hours)  
The second of a two-part multidisciplinary, experiential course sequence in which students successfully carry out and complete their Gulf Impact Projects (GIP), proposed in GULF 3301. Specific activities will be tailored to the particular projects, which can vary depending on the project focus, design, scope and other project-defined characteristics. Completion of the courses GULF 3301 and GULF 3302 including the Gulf Impact Project will lead to award of a Gulf Scholars Program Certificate.
Prerequisite: GULF 3301.
GULF 4496  Directed Independent Study  
1-4 Semester Credit Hours  
Requires a formal proposal of study to be completed in advance of registration and to be approved by the supervising faculty, the Chairperson, and the Dean of the College. Fall, Spring, Summer.
