Art, BFA with Teacher Certification
Program Description
The Bachelor of Fine Arts with Teaching Certification (BFA-TC) offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines rigorous artistic training with education courses that prepare students to teach art at the K-12 level. This program provides a solid foundation in various artistic disciplines, including ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, and art history, while also integrating courses in education to equip students with the pedagogical skills needed to teach and inspire future generations of artists.
Small class sizes ensure personalized instruction, allowing students to work closely with faculty who are practicing artists. These dedicated mentors provide invaluable guidance, helping students refine their artistic skills and develop an understanding of both contemporary and traditional art practices. The integration of art and education coursework provides a well-rounded experience that prepares students for a career in both the creative and educational fields.
Graduates of the BFA in Studio Art with Teaching Certification will be fully prepared to pursue teaching positions in K-12 schools, sharing their passion for art while fostering creativity and critical thinking in students.

BFA-TC Application
Admission to the BFA and BFA-TC degrees is by special application. Such application can be made upon completion of 30 semester hours of art coursework and must be made before completion of 48 semester hours of art coursework. A portfolio consisting of ten to fifteen works representing a variety of media must be submitted using a Presentation Template that can be found on the Art + Design Department website.
Exit Portfolio
All students graduating with a BFA-TC are required to submit an exit portfolio. The Studio Art Coordinator will provide detailed guidelines regarding portfolio content and submission requirements.
The portfolio should include a selection of artwork that best represents the student’s most successful and meaningful coursework completed during their time in the program. In addition, students must submit a written, formal discussion addressing a specific aspect of their work, such as concept development, technical process, or thematic exploration.
The senior capstone class establishes the standards and format for these materials and oversees their collection. All materials must be submitted by the last class day of the semester in which the student plans to graduate.
