Public Relations Minor

The mission of the Public Relations profession is to develop positive relationships between organizations and their publics. The Public Relations Minor is designed for students interested in gaining a basic understanding of the history, function, and tools of Public Relations. The courses that comprise this minor are heavily focused on the development and application of skills utilized by PR professionals, as well as an understanding of theories and concepts necessary for professional writing, critical analysis and creative thinking. The minor consists of 21 semester hours, which include 4 core courses. At least 15 hours for the minor must be upper division.

This minor is for students who have a basic understanding of communication and/or business theory, in addition to effective writing skills. These courses contain a heavy writing component. These courses will not serve as remedial courses for students with writing problems or substitute for required courses in students’ majors.

Students who select this minor must consult with the Faculty Adviser to the Public Relations Minor prior to completing 6 semester hours of coursework listed in the program. The minor declaration must be filed with the Advisor in the College of Liberal Arts.

Students who are interested in this minor must have completed Composition I and II (ENGL 1301  & ENGL 1302 ) with the grade of “C” or better. Furthermore, students must meet any prerequisite requirements for courses in their program.
